Background
A structural constituent of bone. Involved in several processes, including cellular response to vitamin D; cellular response to zinc ion starvation; and osteoblast development. Located in several cellular components, including dendrite; extracellular space; and perikaryon. Used to study congenital hypothyroidism and osteoporosis. Biomarker of autosomal dominant hypocalcemia; end stage renal disease; and polycystic kidney disease. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in osteoarthritis; osteoporosis; prostate cancer; rheumatoid arthritis; and vitamin K deficiency bleeding. Orthologous to human BGLAP (bone gamma-carboxyglutamate protein).
